Interview
Can you tell us about your journey from idea to company?
Together with my co-founder, Suze van der Zwet, who has experience with projects related to urban green spaces, we saw an opportunity to improve people's everyday lives. The idea for Lyckan - Social Green Spaces was born out of our shared realization of how important nature is for people's health and well-being, and how this is often lacking in today’s work environments. We saw the potential to create social green spaces indoors. Our pilot project at SLU Umeå, where we are designing an indoor green environment, marks an important step. The room will become a place for students and staff to relax, interact, and engage in workshops. We have received a lot of positive feedback from both students and staff, and have also been recognized for our vision, including:
Finalists in the NOBALIS Entrepreneurial and Innovation Capacity Development Programme 2024 - European Union
Finalists in the STARTUP 2024 Venture Cup - Sweden
Winners of the Innovation Bootcamp 2023 - Umeå
I have also had the privilege of working as a student consultant for SLU Holding, which has given me insights into entrepreneurship and innovation. Through this work, I have developed an even stronger passion for developing ideas that can make the world more sustainable and inclusive. It has inspired me to collaborate with friends and start more innovative projects, such as Wordisode – Lyckan is just the beginning!
In what ways have you received support in your entrepreneurial journey?
We have received invaluable support from SLU Holding, which has helped us with legal matters, marketing, and networking. Additionally, we have had access to tremendous knowledge resources within SLU and collaborated with an architect and other experts to visualize our solutions and ensure that they are practically feasible. We have also received support through Venture Cup and their mentors, who have provided valuable feedback to help us with marketing, pitch training, and refining our business model.
What tips do you have for students who have an idea or are considering starting their own business?
Dare to take the first step: Start small and test your idea. You’ll learn a lot along the way.
Network and seek support: Build connections both inside and outside your university, as different perspectives can take your idea to new levels. Utilize resources such as incubators and innovation hubs. Organizations like SLU Holding can be an invaluable support.
Persevere: Starting your own business is a process that requires time and commitment. Learn from both successes and setbacks.
Dare to fail: See every challenge as an opportunity to learn something new.
Think sustainably: It’s not just about the future, but also an increasingly important competitive advantage.
